Ran into Gregg at the gym this morning -- he's the friend (and SF Symphony honcho) who got us tickets to take my mom and aunt to see "Peter and the Wolf" on Sunday, with Leonard Nimoy narrating. I thought Nimoy was a bit of a bust -- not one Spock allusion or joke -- but Gregg said Nimoy was adamant about not doing anything that referred to his most popular role, not even a single "And Peter closed the gate so the wolf could not get in, which was ... most logical." This made for a very straightforward telling of the piece, and not nearly as entertaining as Daniel Handler's version from two years ago, wherein the Lemony Snicket author changed it to a gruesome story of a depraved boy named Peter and his horrible persecution of a poor forest wolf.

We did run into [livejournal.com profile] capy and Joe, and saw [livejournal.com profile] dhpbear way down in the front row. They might have been hoping for a slightly more Spock-ish narration as well.

Been playing a lot of Hand and Foot Canasta with my mom and my aunt while they are here. After an initial win, the team of my mom and me has fallen every night to Jack and my aunt:

As you can see, we're consistently coming in right below their scores, but our luck may change tonight, because I'm swapping chair positions with my mom. Something has to give.

OMG

I didn't know anyone played Canasta anymore! I thought I was one of the few who remembered it.

Florence Henderson doing "Peter and the Wolf" a few years ago was a hoot. The conductor was in his twenties and Florence kept flirting with him and making jokes about her interest in young men.
