[livejournal.com profile] qbear and I trekked down to Saratoga Friday night for a performance of "Man of La Mancha," to benefit the [livejournal.com profile] poohbearjim scholarship fund at the San Francisco Art Institute. Saw tons of folks -- [livejournal.com profile] profkampf, [livejournal.com profile] mindplay, [livejournal.com profile] labeartorycub, [livejournal.com profile] keanubear, [livejournal.com profile] timzilla, [livejournal.com profile] daved010, [livejournal.com profile] urso, [livejournal.com profile] tmaher, and of course the play's director, [livejournal.com profile] howbearca, among others. It was a good production, with strong singing, and it raised more than $2000 for the scholarship fund. It was also a pleasure to see so many folks we hadn't seen in a while. We stopped at the Myung Dong Tofu Cabin on the way down for some bibimbap, since we didn't think we could wait until after the production to eat dinner with the rest of the group and the cast.

Saturday, since [livejournal.com profile] profkampf was in town (and staying with us), we had a few of those same folks (plus others) over for a potluck and board game evening. The hit of the evening was an authentic 1962 vintage copy of Barbie: Queen of the Prom, that our friends Victor and Mel brought. While others played Sorry and Apples to Apples in the living room, Ray, Victor, [livejournal.com profile] timmmmbar and [livejournal.com profile] drew101 competed to purchase gowns, get boyfriends and become president of a high school club, which were all necessary before you could go to the prom. The best thing about the game, besides the awesome vintage graphics, were that Victor and Mel have collected the actual Barbie dolls in their authentic prom gowns, so after you progressed in the game and purchased your prom gown, you could display the appropriate Barbie in front of you.

how very gay
Ray, Robb and Tim vie to date the dreamy Hank, not the nerdy Poindexter

To no one's surprise, Ray was crowned Barbie, Queen of the Prom.

Today the three of us met the formerly-on-LJ sflonestar and mytruepassion for brunch with [livejournal.com profile] simonbear and then to see the Sex and the City movie, which we all enjoyed. It really was like watching a whole season of the series on DVD, on the big screen, and some of the laughs came from the audience rather the movie. When Carrie's dream closet was revealed by Big, for example, the whole audience of women and gay men oohed and ahhed in unison, and then all laughed at one another for oohing and aahing.

So I was telling Jack about how Victor, at the game night on Saturday, had brought a frozen dessert of chocolate wafers and Cool Whip, and had left it out on the counter to defrost. But then he got caught up in the Barbie game and forgot about it, and it melted entirely into a puddle of mush.

"Oh no!" Jack said. And then he began singing the old Freddy Fender Song: "Wasted cakes and wasted pies ..."

"I could never live here with you guys," Ray then remarked.

I'm all too familiar with the Barbie game. We play it in teams. It's way more fun than it should be, especially considering that we're grown gay men and its intended for little girls.

What about the PROM PRINCESS!!! My Barbie is SO going Carrie at that prom. She had her boyfriend, was going steady with him, and her class presidency way before everyone else! ;)

And Hank? There was no Hank! ;D

LOL "Mean Girls", eh? That's actually pretty accurate, but switch out Victor with Greg. ;)

And the boyfriend options were:
-Ken, the ash blond gay
-Bob, the white blond jock (who was my bf)
-Mark, the brunette brain/scientist
-Poindexter, the ginger nerd
