Busy weekend. Saturday night, we had my brother and his wife over to watch the extended version of The Two Towers, and we were MST3K-ing all over that baby. Biggest laughs were when Wormtongue asked Eowyn what she feared most ("30 and single!") and when Gandalf called for his white horse Shadowfax, who galloped up in slow motion (and [livejournal.com profile] qbear started singing Styx's "Lady").

Sunday we were off to the San Francisco Symphony Youth orchestra's version of perennial holiday classic for kids, Peter and the Wolf read by local author Lemony Snicket, who writes the popular children's books A Series of Unfortunate Events. He rewrote the story to make it morbid and gruesome, until it finally reached a fever pitch and he screamed and ran off the stage. All good fun.

Snicket:: "Grandfather called for Peter to come into the house, to take out the trash, and recycling. But Peter was a nasty, greedy boy, the kind who never did what his grandfather wanted. Hence, the current administration."

After that, we headed up to [livejournal.com profile] cthelarger's lovely, nearby home for a viewing of the second part of Angels in America with [livejournal.com profile] chriskomater, [livejournal.com profile] arkanjil and [livejournal.com profile] baraksf. The moving drama on the wall-size TV was most enjoyable, as was the company and conversation, and the yummy dinner afterwards. It was good to finally meet and get to know Chris.

After dinner, we trekked the half mile to home and caught the Survivor finale on Tivo, and were pleased to see that our favorite (the feisty Latina) beat out the weepy neurotic and the devious backstabber. We didn;'t get to bed until close to midnight, on a "school night", which is unusual for us.

I am still bitter about how my sweet, and now late, Auntie Beatrice got tangled up with that disreputible Snicket fellow. I'd pop him a good one if I could ever find him. Unfortunately, he is exceptionally clever about keeping himself well hidden. Last I heard he was living on a small flotilla which here means "a shoddy raft made of ballot box lids" teatherd under a pier in china basin. Still hacking away his insane stories about those three rude children who bite people and have bad taste in hair accessories.

I read today that Snicket and his wife sent out a baby announcement for their new offpsring, with a photo of a rubber chicken wrapped in swaddling clothes.

old news? oh well.

Aw, I'm jealous even though I have my reservations about Daniel Handler (because he thinks he's the new Gorey, I suppose) the Lemony Snicket books were great fun. So I support him in my own strange way, although I'm not about to write songs about his mileu the way Stephin Merrit did.
Anyhow, I heard that Billy Connolly is going to play Uncle Monty in the "A Series of Unfortunate Events" movie... along with Jude Law (Lemony Snicket), Jim Carrey (Count Olaf), and Meryl Streep (Aunt Josephine). Watch out mainstream! Hang on to those first editions folks!

Survivor was so good. After Rupert, Sandra was my favorite and I loved seeing her win it. I taped Angels in America, and will hopefully get to see it tonight. Did you know the entire Lords of the Rings trilogy (the first two parts in extended version, and the 3 hour, 20 minute finale) are playing tomorrow at the Metreon? If I had a day off and a donut cushion for the derriere, I'd be there.

We'd go see the whole trilogy too, if we had the time off (and the donut cushions).

I love Lemony Snicket and Peter and the Wolf.

I heard on NPR a few weeks ago that Gavin Friday (formerly of the Virgin Prunes) was doing a new soundtrack/reading of Peter and the Wolf (David Bowie anyone???).
