Every year I look forward to the Village Voice Pazz and Jop Poll, an annual roundup of what the nation’s music critics thought were the best releases of the previous year. And every time, I find myself more and more out of touch … until this year! I actually own a quarter of the top 40 choices. And my taste appears to span the musical range from A to B, from American indie-rock to British indie-pop. I am legion, I contain multitudes.

My choices in the top 40:
9. New Pornographers, Twin Cinema
11. LCD Soundsystem, LCD Soundsystem
17. Beck, Guero
18. Bloc Party, Silent Alarm
19. The Go! Team, Thunder, Lightning, Strike (my favorite CD from last year)
21. Gorillaz, Demon Days
26. Franz Ferdinand, You Could Have It So Much Better
32. Coldplay, X&Y
33. Decemberists, Picaresque
35. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah

love, love, LOVE the New Pornographers' "Twin Cinema" and the new Franz Ferdinand. Also, faves of 2005 for me includes New Order's "Waiting for the Siren's Call", and the Dresden Dolls.

Two bears extolling it's greatness. I'll have to download New Pornographers' "Twin Cinema". I've got some downloads left on my eMusic.

may I also recommend Fiona Apple's "Extraordinary Machine" and My Morning Jacket's "Z", both of which were also in the Top 10.

Despite having plenty to do at work, I decided to browse the Pazz & Jop list. Somehow that seemed more interesting to me. LOL While I do have some titles (see below) I feel even more painfully out-of-touch than before.

I made it through No. 1540 on the albums list. After scrolling through a 521-way tie for No. 1019, I had to stop. The same goes for the singles list, where I made it through a 221-way tie for No. 313 before calling it quits.

Albums:
9. LCD Soundsystem - LCD Soundsystem
20. Bettye LaVette - I've Got My Own Hell To Raise
95. Missy Elliott - The Cookbook
123. Arcade Fire - Funeral
132. Iron & Wine - Woman King
141. Aimee Mann - The Forgotten Arm
358. Bob Mould - Body of Song
358. Josh Rouse - Nashville
399. The Juan MacLean - Less Than Human
406. Michael Penn - Mr Hollywood Jr., 1947
553. John Cale - Black Acetate
1019. Paula Frazer - Leave the Bad Things Behind

Singles (many thanks to the iTunes Music Store):
5. Gwen Stefani - Hollaback Girl
18. Missy Elliott featuring Ciara and Fat Man Scoop - Lose Control
19. Mariah Carey - We Belong Together
27. Rihanna - Pon de Replay
29. M.I.A. - Galang
30. System of a Down - B.Y.O.B.
61. M.I.A. - Sunshowers
67. Mariah Carey - Shake It Off
75. D4L - Laffy Taffy
75. Juelz Santana - There It Go! (The Whistle Song)
88. 50 Cent - Candy Shop
98. David Banner - Play
147. Goldfrapp - Ooh La La
235. 50 Cent - Just A Little Bit
235. Ciara featuring Missy Elliott - 1, 2 Step

Back to the grind, I guess ...
