So we’re in the car this morning, heading to work, and I slip in a mix CD sent to me by cool British guy
latestarter. The old dance song “Missing” starts playing.
qbear and I listen to it for a minute, then Jack starts singing along.
“And I miss you,” he sings, “like the desert’s Mr. Ed …”
“That’s not the right words,” I say. “It’s ‘like the deserts miss the rain.’ ”
“I never pay attention to the words. I’m usually just dancing like a demon,” he says, shifting around in his car seat to approximate dancing.
A few seconds pass. “I love this song! It’s my favorite!” he adds. “Who does it?”
“How can it be your favorite if you don’t know who does it? It’s by ‘Everything But The Girl.’ ”
“Of course!” he says. ”And I miss you … like a dessert for Mr. Ed …”
I swear!” I say. “I should just get a tape recorder, record everything you say before you have your first coffee, and just transcribe it.”
