Our weekend

So yesterday [livejournal.com profile] qbear was acting very snippy, full of backtalk and such. So I say to him, “You’re awfully contrary today!”

And he replies, “No, I’m not! You are!”

* * *

Later, we’re in the car, traveling to the store to pick up some groceries, while listening to some CD of singer-songwriters. A song (“Society’s Child”) comes on, and I mention that it’s by Janis Ian, who we saw in person a few years ago at a gay and lesbian function.

“Pickled egg,” Jack says.

“What?” I ask. “Why did you say ‘pickled egg’?”

“I didn’t!” he protests. “I said, ‘Big ‘ol dyke!’”

So, this morning, I’m leaving, and I take a look in the shower, which is gleaming and purty now that I’ve taken the ScumBuster to it. “Isn’t it nice,” I ask [livejournal.com profile] qbear, conveniently seated nearby.

Without blinking he breaks into song, to the tune of “Edelweiss” from The Sound of Music. This is what I remember:

“Scour out
Shower grout
Every morning I scrub thee
White as snow
So mold won’t grow
With ScumBuster I rub thee.”

I thought at first he was singing “Sour Kraut,” since I have a German background and maybe I have been a bit grumpy this weekend. And maybe he was. He hasn’t been enunciating that clearly, or maybe my ears haven’t been hearing well.

Pickled egg.
