It's been over 20 years since I graduated from college, but I still have the traditional school-year mindset that summer is for recreation, and September through May is for working, studying and getting things done. And while I work all year round, my programming classes at San Francisco City College have been only in the fall and spring semesters, leaving summer for loafing (and reinforcing that school-year mindset).

My fall class on UNIX shell scripting starts in two weeks, thus bringing summer "officially" to a close for me. Never did get to the beach as much as I wanted to. Never did get to laze about on our sun-dappled lawn, savoring the smell of fresh-mown grass, sipping icy lemonade while listening to the birds chirping and the insects buzzing in the trees.* And we went to hardly any bear-laden pool parties this year, due to being so busy on weekends. Ah, well, there's always next year.

In the meantime, now that autumn is in full swing,** it's time to hunker down for a course in self-improvement. By the time springs ends, I want to get the following eight-point plan accomplished.

1. [livejournal.com profile] qbear and I will each have lost weight, through exercise and proper nutrition. My target weight is 210, which means I have 25 pounds to go.
2. By getting to the gym more often for weightlifting, I will have gained additional muscle mass.
3. By exercising on the treadmill and other cardio equipment, and through swimming, I will have improved my overall fitness.
4. I will have taken this UNIX shell scripting class this fall, and another programming class in the spring.
5. I'll have finished reading the big pile of books on my nightstand.
6. I'll have cleared out the big mass of shrubs and weeds by our yucca trees out back, in preparation for more planting in the spring. (We want room for a lemon tree, which will come in handy for cooking and beverages.)
7. I'll have found a new doctor and dentist. (My old doctor moved away, and my old dentist went off my health plan. Anyone local have a recommendation?)
8. We'll have spent more time with friends rather than hunkering down and watching so much TV, and spending so much time on our computers.

Wish me luck ... although luck doesn't have much to do with it.

* We don't actually have a lawn, but this image always reminds me of summer anyways. Especially insects buzzing in the trees.

** Here's how we tell it's autumn in San Francisco: the average temperature has dropped from 69 to 67.
