qbear called me downstairs because A Charlie Brown Christmas is on, thus signalling the start of the Christmas season. We have it on DVD, but there's still something so communal about watching the half-hour cartoon at a time when you know millions of other people are, too. If only it had commercials for Coca-Cola and Dolly Madison snack cakes, it would be a perfect exercise in nostalgia.
As it is, it's as close to perfect as TV cartoons get, crummy animation and all. It has charm, it has wit, it has warmth, accompanied by some of the best music (by the great Vince Guaraldi) ever written for television. It was followed by a half hour of "Christmas card" cartoon vignettes from the Peanuts crew, which weren't bad, probably since most of the gags were lifted straight from the comic strip. Much better than the half-hour Christmas special that follows it on the DVD, It's Christmastime Again, Charlie Brown, which is so bad, so vulgar and tasteless, with such horrible music and voice work, that we've never been able to watch more than 10 minutes of it before turning it off in disgust.
Another Peanuts Christmas special airs next Tuesday, I Want a Dog For Christmas, Charlie Brown. I don't hold out hope for it being any good, especially since it stars two of my least favorite Peanuts characters, Rerun and Spike.
